JV: Gardien. C'est ça, Gardien.
JV: Caretaker. That's it. Caretaker.
A clerk comes in the office.
Cl: Excusez-moi.
Cl: Excuse me.
Cl: L'inspecteur Javert voudrait vous voir.
Cl: Inspector Javert is here to see you.
JV: Faites-le attendare.
JV: Tell him to wait.
Valjean leaves his office and talks with Javert.
Ja: I have exciting news, Monsieur le Maire.
Ja: Paris s'intéresse à mon plan.
Ja: Paris is interested in my plan.
JV: De quel plan s'agit-il?
JV: What plan is that, inspector?
Ja: C'est mentionné dans le lettre.
Ja: It's in the letter.
JV: Porquoi ne m'en parlez-vous pas?
JV: Why don't you tell me, inspector?
JV: You said it's your plan.
Ja: J'oubliais. Je m'excuse.
Ja: I beg your parden. I forgot. I apologize.
JV: Pourquoi vous excusez-vous?
JV: Apologize for what?
Ja: J'oubliais. Vous ne savez pas lire.
Ja: I forgot, you don't read.
Ja: Votre employé l'a mentionné.
Ja: Your clerk mentioned it.
Ja: Neglected your education to make your fortune, I suppose.
JV: A quoi Paris s'intéresse donc tant?
JV: What is Paris interested in, inspecteur?
JV: Je suis tout ouîe.
JV: I'm all ears.
Ja: Vigau s'étant considérablement étendue ces
     derniers 5 ans ...
Ja: Because of Vigau's extraordinary growth during the past five years
Ja: J'ai proposé que l'on effectue un recensement
     détaillé.
Ja: I've proposed that we make a detailed census.
JV: Ce serait intéressant.
JV: Well, that would be interesting.
JV: But how is it a police matter?
Ja: Les lois modernes exigent des méthodes modernes,
Ja: Modern law enforcement demands modern methods,
Ja: De plus amples informations.
Ja: And that means information.
Ja: For example: How many people have moved here in the last decade?
Ja: D'où sont-ils venus?
Ja: Where did they come from?
Ja: Quelles sont leurs origines?
Ja: What's their background?
Ja: Is our criminal population homegrown, or are they outsiders?
Ja: Without information we cannot know how to control the dangerous elements.
JV: Vous faites peut-être une erreur.
JV: You might be making a mistake.
Ja: Quel genre d'erreur?
Ja: What mistake is that?
JV: Sometimes people move to a new town to start with a clean slate.
JV: You might be doing more harm than good by prying into their private lives.
Ja: An honest man has nothing to fear from the truth.
Ja: Par example, à Paris, on sait que mon père était un voleur
     et ma mère, une prostituée.
Ja: For example, Paris knows that my father was a thief, and my mother a prostitute.
Ja: If my mother and father were to move here to Vigau.
Ja: I would want everyone to know who and what they are.
JV: Même s'ils s'étaient repentis?
JV: Even if they had reformed themselves?
Ja: Le repentir est une fantaisie.
Ja: Reform is a discredited fantasy.
Ja: Modern science tells us that people are by nature lawbreakers or law abiders.
Ja: A wolf can wear sheep's clothing
Ja: mais c'est toujours un loup.
Ja: but he's still a wolf.
JV: I was just thinking, Inspector, that you have been unlucky.
Ja: Pas de chance? Je ne comprends pas.
Ja: Unlucky? I don't understand.
     ennuyeux.
JV: Unfortunately, you've been assigned to a dull post.
JV: You'd be happier in Paris, where everyone, either by nature or experience,
       is dishonest.
But I'll see if I prefer Paris.
Ja: On m'a demandé d'exposer cette idée à l'adjoint du préfet
     de Paris.
Ja: They've asked me to report to the deputy prefect to further explain my idea.
Ja: Je serai absent pendant 4 jours.
Ja: I'll be gone for four days.
JV: Vous allez nous manquer.
JV: We'll miss you.
JV: Bonne chance.
JV: Good luck.
Ja: Merci. Et au revoir.
Ja: Thank you. And good-bye.
JV: Inspecteur, un moment.
JV: Inspector, one moment.
JV: Venez, je vous prie.
JV: Please.
JV: Un cadeau d'adieu?
JV: Here's a farewell gift.
Ja: Vous m'offrez un cadeau?
Ja: You're offering me a gift?
JV: Oui, inspecteur. Mes papiers.
JV: Yes, Inspector. My papers.
JV: Mon certificat de baptême.
JV: Baptism certificate.
JV: Mon passeport.
JV: Passport.
JV: Mes papiers de travail de quais de Marseille.
JV: Working papers from the Marseilles docks.
     pied.
JV: I want to get your census off on the right foot.
JV: Bonne journée, inspecteur.
JV: Pleasant journey, Inspector.

     maire.
Ja: I saw Jean Valjean perform exactly the same feat of strength the mayor did with the cart.
Ja: Le dur labeur développe incroyablement leur force.
Ja: The hard labor makes them incredibly strong.

Ja: Il doit être démasqué et puni.
Ja: He must be exposed and punished.
JV: Qui est le coupable?
JV: Who is the offender?
Ja: C'est moi.
Ja: I am.

Ja: Je dois être puni.
Ja: I must be punished.

JV: Pour quelle raison?
JV: For God's sake, Javert, for what?
Ja: I denounced you to the Paris prefect of police.
Ja: I swore that you were a convict.
JV: Que j'étais quoi?
JV: You said I was what?
Ja: Un détenu.
Ja: A convict.
Ja: Je n'avais pas de preuve.
Ja: I had no proof.
Ja: Only a memory of this man, Jean Valjean, whom I guarded 20 years ago in prison.
Ja: I denounced you without a shred of evidence.
JV: Vous m'avez dénoncé?
JV: You denounced me?
Ja: Oui.
Ja: Yes.
Ja: C'était insensé de ma part.
Ja: I was a fool.
Ja: Ils m'ont dit que j'avais tort.
Ja: They told me I was wrong.
     raison.
Ja: They said you couldn't be Jean Valjean, and they were right.
     Valjean.
Ja: I've just returned from Arras, where I saw the real Jean Valjean.
JV: Le vrai Jean Valjean?
JV: The real Valjean?
Ja: Two weeks ago, a man who called himself Carnot was arrested outside Arras for
       poaching apples.
Ja: En prison, un détenu l'a bien regardé et il a dit: "Je
     connais cet homme.
Ja: At the prison, a convict took one look at him and said,
       "I know this man.
Ja: We were in prison in Toulon 20 years ago.
Ja: C'est Jean Valjean.
Ja: He's Jean Valjean."
Ja: Je ne l'ai pas cru.
Ja: I didn't believe it.
Ja: I went there to see for myself.
Ja: Eh bien, il n'y a pas de doute.
Ja: Well, there's no question.
Ja: Carnot est Jean Valjean.
Ja: Carnot is Valjean.
Ja: Je m'excuse, monsieur.
Ja: I apologize, monsieur.
Ja: I look at you now, and it's obvious you're not a convict.
JV: So now, you don't think I'm a convict?
Ja: Bien sûr que non.
Ja: Of course I don't.
Ja: J'ai vu Valjean de mes propres yeux.
Ja: I've seen Valjean with my own eyes.
Ja: I must've been out of my mind to think a great man like you
       could be a criminal.
JV: Cet homme, Il avoue être Valjean?
JV: This man ... He admits to being Valjean?
Ja: Bien sûr que non.
Ja: Of course not.
     l'accusation.
Ja: He pretends to be a half-wit who can't understand the charges.
       What else could he do?
Ja: Valjean has broken parole.
Ja: That calls for life imprisonment.
JV: Le procès est prévu pour quand?
JV: When is the trial?
Ja: Demain.
Ja: Tomorrow.
JV: Cela prendra combien de temps?
JV: How long will it take?
Ja: Un après-midi, c'est tout.
Ja: No more than an afternoon.

Co: so no one will know when there's two helpless women here by ourselves.
Co: Isn't it ridiculous that he worried about it with you, a police inspector?
Ja: Quand reviendra-t-il?
Ja: When will he return?
Co: Oh, dans une semaine.
Co: Oh, a week.
Co: C'est difficile à dire.

Co: because you'll hit me?
JV: Dis-moi la vérité!
JV: Tell me the truth!
Co: Tu oses me demander la vérité quand tu me mens
     continuellement?
Co: How dare you ask for the truth when you only tell me lies?

Co: C'est ma vie.
Co: It's my life.
Co: Is that what's going to ruin us?
Valjean sits.
Co: Dis-moi de quoi il s'agit, papa, je t'en prie.
Co: Please tell me what this is all about, Papa.
Co: Je t'en prie.

       From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean Maximilien Lamarque (1770-1832) was a French commander during the
Napoleonic Wars who later became a member of French Parliament. As an
opponent of the Ancien Règime, he is known for his active suppression
of Royalist and Legitimist activity. His death was also the catalyst of
the Parisian June Rebellion of 1832, which formed the basis for the
uprising depicted in Victor Hugo's novel Les Misérables.

Born in Saint-Sever in the Landes departement of France, Lamarque joined
the army in 1791 and rose to the rank of General. In Italy, he led one
of six armies under the command of Napoleon's adopted son Eugéne de
Beauharnais. In 1810, he was created a baron of the French Empire. When
Napoleon was exiled to Elba in 1814, Lamarque remained loyal, returning to
the emperor's service during the Hundred Days. Also during this period,
Lamarque commanded a division of ten thousand men against a Royalist
       uprising in La Vendée.

After the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon was again exiled from France.
Lamarque also went into exile, returning in 1818 and becoming
politically active as a leftist. In 1828, he was elected to the Chamber
of Deputies, representing the departement of Landes. There, Lamarque
was a popular representative of leftist factions. Despite his history as
a general under Napoleon, he was given command of military forces in 1830
in order to suppress Legitimist risings against the July Monarchy.

The rioting on June 5 and June 6 following his death was an action provoked
by Bonapartists and Republicans. It was suppressed by the Army and National
Guard. An estimated 800 were killed or wounded during the conflict. While
the violence broke out following the funeral of Lamarque, some modern
historians name as its cause other political issues related to the June
Rebellion, feeling that Lamarque's death was simply a convenient excuse
for the rebels. The uprising was of brief duration and failed to spread
       beyond Paris.

Victor Hugo's novel Les Misèrables includes a fictional account of
the brief uprising which followed General Lamarque's death. In Les
Misèrables, Hugo views Lamarque as the government's champion of the
poor. The insurrection is a failure in the novel as it was in history, but
is romanticized in the novel and its various adaptations for film, radio,
       and stage.

xx: C'est à ce moment-là qu'ils vont attaquer.
xx: That's where they'll start the fighting.
xx: Well, we won't fight them for every inch.
xx: Nous les encerclerons.
xx: We'll surround them.
Javert is there watching.

I know that you think that I know him little.
Co: I've known him for only a few weeks. That's what you're thinking.
Co: That I'm only a silly girl, that he's little more than a stranger.
Co: Mais ce n'est pas ce que je ressens.
Co: But that's not how I feel.
JV: Je comprends.
JV: I understand.
JV: Vraiment.
JV: I do.

Synopsis:

The movie follows Jean Valjean, a man arrested for stealing
bread. When released on parole, Valjean stays with a bishop
as no one else was willing to allow a convict to stay the
night. Through the kindness of the bishop, who Valjean
attempted to rob, Valjean starts his life anew. He becomes
a wealthy industrialist and a mayor. He eventually befriends
Fantine, a single mother turned prostitute whom he rescued
when she was nearly arrested by the police officer Javert.
Javert was also a guard previously at the prison Valjean was
held in and starts to become suspicious that the Mayor and
Valjean are the same person. When Valjean receives word that
another man is mistaken as him and about to be rearrested, he
reveals his identity. When he visits Fantine, he finds that
she is deathly ill and he promises to raise her very young
daughter, Cosette. When Fantine dies, Valjean escapes from
Javert and buys Cosette from the Thénardiers, corrupt
innkeepers who were supposed to care for her, but were
actually abusing her. Many years later, Cosette, now a
teenager, falls in love with a revolutionary, Marius. By this
time, the trail of Valjean is cold, and Javert is undercover
agent, posing as an insurrectionist trying to undermine the
organization to which Marius belongs. Javert, however, is
captured by Marius and is brought to the barricades as a
prisoner to be executed. Valjean journeys to the barricades
himself when he learns how much Cosette and Marius love each
other, intending to convince Marius to return to Cosette.
When the soldiers shoot and kill Gavroche, a young boy allied
with the revolutionists, Valjean uses his influence with
Marius to have Javert turned over to him, to execute him.
Instead of killing him however, Valjean frees Javert. The
movie ends with Javert, unable to reconcile the goodness shown
to him by Valjean with his perfectly lawful existence, freeing
him, then committing suicide.

Differences from the novel:

The film greatly reduces the roles of many of the characters
in the novel, especially the Thénardiers, who are only
seen when Valjean buys Cosette from them. éponine
also does not play a major role in the film. She and her
sister Azelma only appear in one scene together as children
playing at a table in the Thénardier Inn, whilst Cosette
makes stockings for them, as their mother calls their names.
Marius' role is changed from reluctant participant in the
Revolution to principal leader, resulting in Enjolras' role
to also be changed and reduced. The subplot involving Marius'
political shift is also not present. A large number of
names have also been changed. Valjean is the mayor of
Montreuil-sur-Mer in the novel, not of Vigau. A town of that
name does not even exist in France. The man he saves after
the cart crash is called Fauchelevent, not Lafitte. The man
mistaken for Valjean is called Champmathieu, not Carnot, and
the prisoners identifying him are Brevet, Chenildieu, and
Cochepaille. The film only changed the last two names to
Lombard and Bertin.

Much of the events surrounding the love story between Marius
and Cosette have been removed, including Marius and the
Thénardiers living in the same apartment house as Valjean and
Cosette did. The events involving éponine. The events
involving Gavroche, and most of the events involving the
Revolution. Javert finds Valjean's trace in Paris when he
leaves a note for him, warning him about his daughter's
involvement with a "dangerous revolutionary." The words "she
betrays you every night" in said note have already been the
source for many speculations. In one scene, Valjean slaps
Cosette, which is an act he would never do in the novel. In
the same scene Valjean also confesses his convict past to
Cosette, while in the novel he reveals this to Marius, begging
him not to say a word to Cosette.

Valjean does not die at the end of the film as he does in the
novel. The film closes with him walking away smiling from the
wharf where Javert threw himself into the river, free from the
"shadow of the past" that the Inspector represented.
